Sea Turtles
Year after year, several endangered sea turtle species chose to lay their eggs on the tranquil Caribbean beaches of the Mayan Riviera. They prefer unlighted, serene places, and the warmth of powdery white sand found areas along the ocean shores of the Riviera Maya.There are several places nearby Playa del Carmen along the Riviera Maya officially declared Sea Turtle Sanctuaries, such as Tulum, Xcacel or Xcacelito. Here you can watch as the Green and Caguama (Caretta or Loggerhead) species of sea turtles lay their eggs during nesting season (May to October).The eggs are laid at night, when the female sea turtles emerge from the water and search for a place on the beach to make their nests. After laying their eggs, they cover their eggs carefully and return to the sea. The baby sea turtles are born at night and are guided to the ocean by the light of the moon, stars and the natural iridescence of the Caribbean.Sea turtles are endangered species, so it is forbidden to catch them or to take their eggs.
